What changes when
lived experience
becomes evidence?
Observation gives us a signal. Research asks whether the signal represents something larger.
Follow the evidence ↓Research & Evidence.
The Hidden Worker research agenda asks how work, capability, participation and access can be understood more clearly.
This is the evidence layer of the Hidden Worker ecosystem: a space for research questions, developing measures, knowledge briefs, working papers and the evidence emerging from Forum conversations.
Individual signals begin separately. Stay in the field and watch relationships become visible.
A powerful idea
still needs to be
tested.
Hidden Worker begins with a proposition: that important forms of work, capability and contribution may remain poorly represented when formal employment becomes the dominant lens through which participation is understood.
Research allows those propositions to be examined systematically. It can help distinguish individual experience from broader patterns, identify where assumptions hold or fail, and generate evidence that other institutions can interrogate.
Questions worth
investigating.
The agenda grows from the central Hidden Worker concern: how opportunity is recognised, formed and accessed.
What counts as economic participation?
Examining forms of productive activity that may sit outside conventional employment categories, including informal work, self-directed activity and other livelihood-building practices.
How much capability remains hidden?
Exploring the relationship between skills, experience, credentials, visibility and the institutional mechanisms through which capability becomes recognised.
Why does readiness not always produce entry?
Investigating the barriers between capability and opportunity: networks, information, geography, credibility, capital, gatekeeping and institutional design.
What conditions make opportunity more sustainable?
Looking beyond one-off access towards the ecosystems, relationships and enabling conditions that help participation become more durable.
The Opportunity Rate.
The Opportunity Rate is a developing labour-market concept that asks whether participation can be understood more broadly than employment status alone.
The research challenge is to move from proposition to measurement: defining what should count, how different dimensions should be operationalised, and what the measure can — and cannot — legitimately tell us.
Rate
Evidence does not appear.
It is built carefully.
Observe
Begin with what people, communities and institutions are actually experiencing.
Question
Turn the observation into something that can be examined rather than assumed.
Analyse
Identify patterns, differences, relationships and competing explanations.
Interpret
Explain what the evidence suggests without claiming more than the evidence supports.
Inform
Carry useful knowledge back into policy, practice, dialogue and future research.
What this space
can eventually hold.
01 Opportunity Rate research Developing
Conceptual development, measurement design, pilot findings, methodological notes and future empirical work relating to the Opportunity Rate.
02 Forum knowledge briefs Proposed
Short evidence-led briefs capturing key questions, perspectives and lessons emerging from Hidden Worker Forum conversations.
03 Working papers Future
Longer-form research examining specific dimensions of hidden work, opportunity, participation, capability and access.
04 Evidence notes & data stories Future
Accessible summaries, visual evidence and short explanatory pieces translating research into formats that broader audiences can use.
Strong claims require
strong evidence.
Define before measuring.
Concepts must be clear enough to distinguish what belongs inside the measure from what does not.
Evidence before advocacy.
A compelling idea should not be protected from findings that complicate, weaken or refine it.
Context before generalisation.
Evidence from one community, sample or study should not be treated as though it automatically represents everyone.
Limitations belong in the finding.
Credibility grows when research is clear about uncertainty, assumptions and what remains unresolved.
Build the evidence
before claiming the answer.
The Hidden Worker research programme is developing. As studies, briefs and empirical outputs are completed, this page can become the permanent public evidence library for the platform.
Research becomes useful
when people can interrogate it.
Continue into the Hidden Worker Forum — where evidence can meet lived experience, institutional knowledge and competing perspectives.
