What if we are
measuring the wrong thing?
Sometimes progress begins by changing the question. The Ideas is where Hidden Worker interrogates how we understand work, opportunity and participation.
Change the lens ↓The Ideas.
Hidden Worker is not only asking who is excluded. It is asking whether the way we understand opportunity itself needs to change.
The Opportunity Series moves through three connected questions: what we recognise, how opportunity is built, and who can actually access it.
Before systems change,
language often changes first.
The words we use shape what we recognise. The measures we use shape what becomes visible. And the assumptions we carry influence the kinds of solutions we believe are possible.
The Opportunity Series develops a different way of thinking about economic participation — starting with people whose work, capability or contribution may exist beyond the boundaries of formal employment.
Three ideas.
One developing architecture.
The series moves from recognition, to construction, to the conditions governing entry.
The Opportunity Rate
A challenge to the idea that formal employment status tells us everything worth knowing about economic participation. The concept asks what becomes visible when we also recognise productive activity, capability and the ways people continue to build outside formal work.
Building an Opportunity
Recognition is only the beginning. This idea turns attention towards the structures that help possibility become actionable — skill, evidence, visibility, readiness, discipline and the practical work involved in creating routes towards participation.
The Opportunity Access
Being capable does not necessarily mean being admitted. Opportunity Access examines what happens between readiness and entry: credibility, information, networks, gatekeeping, institutional rules and the systems that determine who gets through the door.
The ideas do not sit
in separate boxes.
Recognise.
See the participation, effort and capability already present.
Build.
Turn capability into something visible, credible and actionable.
Access.
Examine the conditions determining whether opportunity can actually be reached.
Ideas should
keep moving.
01 What counts as meaningful economic participation?
Formal employment matters enormously, but it does not describe every form of work, contribution, learning, trade or livelihood-building. The question is what else deserves to be seen.
02 Can opportunity be built rather than simply found?
This shifts the conversation from passive waiting towards the conditions, assets, proof and connections that can make participation more possible.
03 Why do capable people still struggle to enter?
Readiness and access are not identical. Networks, credibility, gatekeeping, information and institutional design all influence who reaches opportunity.
04 What would an opportunity-centred system look like?
A system that sees participation more clearly, develops capability, reduces unnecessary barriers and creates credible routes between people and possibility.

A different future
may begin with
a better question.
The Ideas exists to question what we count, how opportunity is formed, and why access remains uneven — not as an intellectual exercise alone, but as a foundation for better systems.
Ideas become stronger
when they meet reality.
